Its name draws from Cartier’s rich heritage. In 2014, Louis Cartier commissioned the talented Georges Barbier to create a representation of the modern, refined woman to illustrate an invitation to a jewelry exhibition. La Dame à la panthère celebrated the big cat. Its coat, spotted with onyx and diamonds, adorned a wristwatch the same year. The feline flourished during the Art Deco period. Jeanne Toussaint, a legendary figure in artistic direction in the 1930s, introduced it into her creations. The one who would then be nicknamed the Panther made the feline an emblem for women in search of style, independence, and elegance.
In 1983, Michèle Kanoui, who holds the same position as her illustrious predecessor, designed the lines of a future icon. Inspired by the Santos model, the first wristwatch created by Cartier in 1904, the Cartier Panthère features a softened square with rounded corners and a bezel with visible screws. Its bracelet hugs the skin delicately. These characteristics suggested the watch’s name, as its polished metal links, with a silky shine, possess a suppleness as feline as the animal’s sway.
This ability to move with grace exerts an immediate seductive power. The Cartier Panthère combines geometric rigor with the sensuality of materials. Its minimalist dial, of classical purity, aligns Roman numerals, a railway-style minute track, and traditional blued hands. The crown is topped with either a spinel or a cabochon sapphire.
For two decades, women and men fell under its charm. Against all expectations, in 2004, the house on Place Vendôme stopped its distribution. Fortunately, pauses are meant to be closed. In 2017, the Cartier Panthère made more than a mere reappearance.
Driven by precise quartz movements, the collection’s references established themselves as an easygoing companion for everyday life. Since 2024, the cases, available in a wide range of sizes—mini, small, medium, and large—are offered in steel, gold, or a combination of both. Versions enhanced with gemstones emphasize its refined personality, reminding us that the Panthère belongs as much to the world of watchmaking as to jewelry.
Three distinctive features
An architectural design with soft lines
Square, yet without rigidity, the Panthère’s case embodies the typical “Cartier” balance on its own. Inspired by the original Santos design, the watch stands out for its harmonious proportions and the presence of eight screws on the bezel. This skillful blend of structure and sensuality gives it a recognizable and timeless elegance.
An unmatched suppleness
It is undoubtedly its most iconic signature. The construction of the Panthère’s bracelet offers absolute comfort thanks to extreme flexibility. Each link reflects light and evokes a feline gait. A technical and aesthetic feat, the bracelet makes the Panthère a jewel that moves with the rhythm of the wrist.
Fusion of jewelry and watch
Placing the Panthère in a category proves illusory. It belongs to none, yet transcends them all. Both watch and ornament, it embodies the jeweler’s craftsmanship of the maison. In its purest form as well as in its most precious variations, the Panthère expresses a form of essential elegance. It attracts without ever seeking to seduce.
In 2019, the Panthère reinvents itself, gaining in relief. On a round 23.6 mm case or a rectangular one (38.2 x 15.2 mm) rises the stylized head of the feline. Gold forms its luminous coat. Two tsavorites, in an intense green, bring its gaze to life. The spots and the nose in black lacquer add contrast and strength to this miniature sculpture. More than ever, the watch asserts itself as an expressive and untamable jewel.
With highly jeweled pieces, Cartier once again elevates its totem animal. A white gold iteration, fully set with 599 diamonds (3.62 carats) (€91,000), stands out as the most dazzling of the Panthère watches. The 397 diamonds, 114 spessartites, and black and brown lacquer combine to create an original and vibrant striped coat. This creation highlights the excellence of the Parisian maison’s artistic crafts.
Fourth dimension
The Mini, crafted with a 25.15 x 18.41 x 6 mm case, marks the entry into the Cartier Panthère collection. It is available in steel (€4,200) and yellow gold (€24,400). Some references in yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold are set (bezel and case) with 99 diamonds.
