The dragon as a point of origin
Everything begins with the dragon. In the Imperial Dragon Automaton Sapphire Opal, it is not merely a decoration or a simple pretext for the automaton. It is truly the starting point of the watchmaking project. The watch’s architecture, choice of materials, scenography, and the rhythm of the animation are built around its presence.
At Jaquet Droz, the automaton is never a technical demonstration on its own. It is a staging at the heart of the narrative that tells the story of the watch. Here, there is no figurative story or representational scene. The dragon does not fight, take flight, or emerge as one might expect.
This posture directly reflects the symbolism of the dragon in imperial China. Unlike in Western imagination, the dragon is not a chaotic or destructive creature. It is associated with the emperor and his celestial mandate, as well as with the harmony between heaven and earth. It embodies legitimate authority, based on balance rather than domination. The dragon governs the elements; it regulates the waters, the rains, and the seasons.
It is precisely this interpretation that Jaquet Droz has chosen to inscribe at the heart of its Imperial Dragon Automaton Sapphire Opal.
Transparency, depth, and restraint
The materials used in this timepiece fully contribute to the story told by the automaton.
The sapphire case, first of all, one of the key elements of the piece, demonstrates not only the savoir-faire of Jaquet Droz but is also a conceptual choice. Through its transparency and crystalline clarity, it allows the décor and the mechanics to coexist, each fully exposed without any compartmentalization. The eye moves freely from the dragon to the animation that flows from it. Sapphire is also a means of playing with the light, reflecting across the piece and highlighting every movement of the dragon.
Faced with the absolute transparency of sapphire, opal introduces a more organic dimension. A stone with ever-changing reflections that are never fixed, it captures light without ever returning it uniformly. In the Imperial Dragon Automaton Sapphire Opal, it evokes the dragon’s internal energy, that invisible force that flows without revealing itself abruptly. Where the dragon represents imperial stability, the opal reminds us that this stability rests on constant movement, much like the mechanics of this automaton watch.
Regarding the mechanics, the automaton’s animation follows the same logic of restraint. The dragon’s movements are measured, almost ceremonial. The animal breathes without seeking to surprise in a combative or violent manner. This slowness imposes a particular relationship with time. It invites the wearer to observe the watch, and perhaps to reflect on a movement that unfolds gradually.
An ancient fascination, never abandoned
If the Imperial Dragon Automaton Sapphire Opal achieves such a level of coherence, it is because it is part of an enduring relationship between Jaquet Droz and the figure of the dragon. This imperial symbol par excellence, carrying both meaning and prestige, has appeared in the House’s creations for many years, as a theme it has never ceased to explore.
The Sapphire – Lapis Lazuli Dragon Automaton offered a more telluric and mineral interpretation of the dragon, which appeared anchored in the bluish depth of the stone. The Imperial Dragon Automaton in red gold and cuprite explored a majestic and solar dimension by playing on the chromatic richness and density of the materials.
The creations made in collaboration with John Howe, notably the Dragon Tourbillon, opened a very narrative path: that of the mythological, almost epic dragon, rooted in the imagination. As for the Red Gold Dragon Mask Tourbillon Skelet, it fragmented the symbol by reducing it to a face, as if the dragon could exist through mere evocation.
A contemporary interpretation of the marvelous
Through the Imperial Dragon Automaton Sapphire Opal, Jaquet Droz reminds us that high watchmaking is an art in its own right, capable of being a territory for cultural reflection. The dragon is not a symbol frozen in the past or fossilized; it becomes a resolutely contemporary figure expressed through innovative materials and top-level mechanics.
Far more than a spectacular automaton, this timepiece is a work of art in which Jaquet Droz condenses its relationship with the symbolism it holds dear and the unique mechanics that are its signature. Everything converges on the dragon: the transparency of sapphire, the vibration of opal, the slowness of the animation. This piece asserts itself through what it represents on all levels and reminds us that, in the high watchmaking of the House, time is not only measured, it is told.
