Joint Race

For more than sixty years, the worlds of TAG Heuer and Porsche brushed past each other, crossed paths, without ever truly uniting. In 2021, the start of a close collaboration changed everything, paving the way for the creation of strongly sports-oriented watches that merge the DNA of both brands. A glance in the rearview mirror is a must!

Nothing seemed predetermined. TAG Heuer and Porsche were born in speed, grew up in competition, shaped by the asphalt of racetracks. One timed the champions, the other carried them to victory. Starting in 1963, the two began sharing the same banner, a name with a now-legendary ring: Carrera. But that’s not all!

The story begins in the early 1960s. Jack Heuer launched the Carrera, a chronograph that would become one of the most famous in sports watchmaking. The name was chosen as a tribute to the Carrera Panamericana, an automobile race as dangerous as it was exhilarating and demanding, held in Mexico in the ’50s. At the same time, Porsche also adopted this name to designate its most sporty models. The future 911 Carrera would go on to become a global icon.

For decades, Porsche and TAG Heuer evolved side by side. Heuer, then TAG Heuer, became the official timekeeper of international competitions, a natural partner of motorsport. Porsche, for its part, accumulated victories—Le Mans, Formula 1, endurance championships, even the Dakar Rally. Drivers from one brand often wore the watches of the other, even though the two companies were not formally linked. A relationship built on fact, almost sentimental, before it became commercial.

At the Crossroads

It wasn’t until 2021 that the collaboration became official. In February of that year, Porsche and TAG Heuer announced a global strategic partnership. A natural, almost expected union that goes far beyond simply placing two logos side by side. The first creations born from this alliance show just how deeply the inspiration is shared, as illustrated by the very first model, the Carrera Porsche Chronograph powered by the Heuer 02 calibre.

Three years later, the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Porsche 963 pays tribute to the hypercar entered in endurance racing by the Stuttgart brand. Its openworked dial evokes a tubular chassis structure, its forged-carbon bezel with tachymeter scale symbolizes speed, its caseband displays the Porsche name in relief, while its rotor, visible through the back, mirrors the shape of a steering wheel. Limited to 963 pieces, the watch beats to the rhythm of the TH20-00 calibre, an in-house movement offering an 80-hour power reserve… like an engine built for long-distance racing.

In the meantime, the Carrera Chronograph x Porsche RS (2022) takes a different, more historical approach. It celebrates the first 911 to bear the Carrera name, the famous 1972 RS 2.7. Its white dial is accented with bright touches of color, blue or red, echoing the iconic livery of the car, easily recognizable by its rear spoiler and front air dam. Inside, the Heuer 02 calibre can be found, once again expressing the union of past and present. Two variations, one in steel and the other in rose gold, celebrate the anniversary of the most legendary GT.

In the same year, the TAG Heuer Connected E4 Porsche Edition (2022) allows, among other things, data from the car to be displayed directly on the wrist. Its exclusive and practical features transform the watch into an extension of the dashboard of a Taycan or a latest-generation hybrid model.

In 2023, TAG Heuer injects a fresh dose of energy and adrenaline with the Carrera Porsche Chronograph Orange Racing. This series stands out for its high-contrast, ultra-legible display of time information, housed in a 44mm case machined from black DLC steel.

But arguably the boldest piece is the Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche Rallye, offered in steel or 3N gold, unveiled to mark the 50th anniversary of two legends born the same year, the Carrera and the 911. Here, TAG Heuer designed a unique mechanism, the TH20-08 calibre. Its special feature? The chronograph hand accelerates faster during the first fifteen seconds, then slows down, reproducing on the dial the 0–100 km/h sprint of a Porsche 911, capable of reaching 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds. The dial echoes the aesthetic of its dashboard, with red markings representing the engine’s rise in revs.

This burst of acceleration propels the collaboration between the two brands onto unexplored roads. That of haute horology, with the Carrera Tourbillon x Porsche Panamericana (2024), where the flying tourbillon, lacquered yellow hands, and sleek design aim to capture the spirit of the legendary 3,373-kilometer race across asphalt, trails, and dust. This limited edition of 255 pieces draws inspiration from the aesthetic details of the Porsche 550 Spyder, which won its class in the Pan-Am. The silver-toned dial thus evokes its bodywork.

Today, the Carrera is no longer just the symbol of a chronograph or a car model. It has become the name of a shared journey, that of two icons—a story of speed, timing, and passion—whose road is only just beginning.
