Undoubtedly one of the most useful watch complications, the annual calendar—which displays the date for months of 30 and 31 days and requires only one adjustment per year, at the end of February—was invented and patented by Patek Philippe in 1996. This ingenious innovation combines ease of use, everyday practicality, and horological sophistication. For nearly 30 years, it has taken on many different forms. Here’s a look back.

The very first annual calendar was the Reference 5035G, introduced in 1996 and powered by the self-winding Caliber 315 S QA. Its layout features two subdials for the day and month positioned above the central line, and a 24-hour subdial placed just above the date window at 6 o’clock. Simple, efficient, and highly legible.

Changing Faces

From 1998 onward, a moon-phase display was added to this practical complication, lending it a graceful poetic touch. But the major evolution came in 2010 with the Ref. 5205G-001, which introduced three arched apertures at the top of the dial to display the day, date, and month — offering a more intuitive and elegant reading of the calendar indications.

That same year, 2010, saw the introduction of the annual calendar to Patek Philippe’s flagship Nautilus collection with Ref. 5726A-001 in stainless steel. The Nautilus Annual Calendar features a moon-phase display and a 24-hour subdial. The two apertures for the day and month sit just below the 12 o’clock logo, while the date appears in a third window at 6 o’clock.

Distinct Faces

While the layouts are common across most models, some watches feature a unique dial design. The annual calendar in regulator style, launched in 2011 as Ref. 5235G-001, is one such example, with three apertures: the day at 10:15, the month at 1:45, and the date at 6 o’clock.
Weekly calendar version, Ref. 5212A-001, 2019
It takes a fresh twist with the weekly calendar Ref. 5212A-001 from 2019, which displays the day and week via two central hands. The month corresponding to the week is read on the outer perimeter, while the date appears in a traditional window at 3 o’clock.

Other Firsts

In 2022, the manufacture added the Travel Time complication in Ref. 5326G-001, which even synchronizes the date with the selected time zone. In 2023, the beloved practical complication made its way into the Aquanaut collection with Ref. 5261R-001 Aquanaut Luce Annual Calendar.

Although much younger than its illustrious elder, the perpetual calendar—also launched by Patek Philippe as a wristwatch in 1925—it’s easy to see why this complication quickly became one of the most popular of the renowned Geneva brand.
