In 1987, Chanel took its first steps on the watchmaking scene under the impetus of its artistic director at the time, Jacques Helleu. “I fought to make a strong model, a unique model that could remain a reference, and not to launch a simple collection”, he said of the Première watch, whose inimitable look was a concentrated blend of some of Chanel’s strongest aesthetic codes. Its shape? That of the Place Vendôme and the N°5 perfume bottle. Its bracelet? A golden chain braided with a black leather ribbon inspired by the legendary quilted bag of the House. Thirty-five years later, Arnaud Chastaingt, Director of the Watchmaking Creation Studio, has revisited its instantly recognizable look in a version that is faithful to the original. The changes are extremely subtle, which is entirely logical, as this ever-youthful Première needed nothing more to make its return to the limelight.
