After the avalanche of watches making their debut at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022, Yannick Meylan, (joint) CEO of specialist retailer Lionel Meylan, shares his impressions of the models that most appealed to him, presented here in alphabetical order.
Chanel J12 Diamond Tourbillon Calibre 5 (matte black ceramic, 38mm)
Everything Chanel does shows respect: respect for its codes, for its guiding principles, for elegance and, most of all, complete and utter respect for the customer. Which is why each of its timepieces is a revelation. Proudly exhibiting the solitaire diamond that is its beating heart, I was instantly mesmerised by the beauty of this tourbillon which hides a number of complexities, including the specially developed cut of the stone. I actually have a secret name for it. Ask nicely and I’ll tell you…
Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake Glacier Blue
For a long time, it felt as though the authentic spirit of modern watchmaking’s pioneers had disappeared from my life Until, that is, I plunged headfirst into the world of Czapek, in 2015. You should join me! Feel the energy, the creativity, that overwhelming desire to succeed. That authentic spirit is still with us and it’s as irresistible as ever. You’ll know it as soon as you feel it. It’s a different sensation, one that’s natural and sincere.
Hermès Arceau Le Temps Voyageur
I’m a huge fan of Hermès timepieces. Each brings a unique interpretation of complications with the ultimate aim of instilling a dash of poetry into our lives. What could be more fascinating than an interpretation of its world time mechanism in the form of a veritable voyage?
IWC Big Pilot’s Watch 43 TOP GUN
What could be more natural for a pilot than to have a particular affinity with this family of watches? It’s not often that I say it, but this year IWC hasn’t put a foot wrong! This consolidation of the Pilot’s Watch flagship line has me flying high. Perfect proportions, true character and impressive style. My ideal co-pilot.
Ulysse Nardin Freak S
I’m a dreamer. I love the escapism science fiction brings. Having set eyes on this watch, I could picture myself shooting off on an intergalactic exploration mission. As always at Ulysse Nardin, a brand at the vanguard of watchmaking innovation, simplicity, technicity, efficiency and beauty form a perfect package. Nothing has been left to chance: board this vessel and you’ll be in safe hands.
Zenith Chronomaster Open (steel, black dial)
Revisiting a well-established design is a complex task, as we all know. I have to say I’m impressed by the freshness Zenith has succeeded in bringing to this icon without spilling a drop of its DNA. It’s an invitation to continue an already fabulous journey while its open heart is clearly aimed at a new generation. A brilliantly accomplished makeover.
