Richard Mille Sheer Joy Wrapped up in a Watch
Focus on the RM 88 Automatic Winding Tourbillon Smiley
After candy, time for a cute new crush? What might have been a one-off in Richard Mille’s creative strategy gets a sequel. Three years after creating a collection on a theme of licorice, marshmallows and lollipops, here comes a new facet of the brand’s sense of humor. Its RM 88 Automatic Winding Tourbillon Smiley is a ray of sunshine in the watchmaking landscape, a joyful burst and literally a smile. That being said, it’s not really surprising for anyone acquainted with Mr. Mille’s warm and playful personality. This is more than just a creation and there’s a whole spirit at work here. It might be merely anecdotal if the brand founder did not continue to maintain personal contacts with his most important clients. The RM 88 Smiley is therefore an extension of his character traits that permeate the brand. This sunny, emphatic, expansive character is embodied in all the miniatures that adorn the RM 88 like so many positive messages: sunshine, unicorns, rainbows and of course the yellow dot with a stylized smile that has become an alphabet in its own right, a new generation of digital ideograms, the Smiley. If you look closely, there is even a cocktail with an umbrella and a pineapple. Could one possibly dream of anything sweeter and tastier?
