More than 40 years after releasing its first diving watch, TAG Heuer is bringing it back, with some improvements and a new look

At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2021, TAG Heuer is putting the Aquaracer in the spotlight with the new Aquaracer Professional 300. Although it still has the distinctive dodecagonal bezel, the new model sports some new elements and an updated look.

Six improvements

TAG Heuer’s ambition for the Aquaracer is to create a bold, high-performance and ergonomic watch. With this in mind, the manufacture has decided to upgrade six elements: the rotating bezel, screw-down crown, sapphire crystal, luminous markers and hands, 200 m depth rating, and clasp.

The bezel retains its traditional twelve sides, but it has had a facelift; the new ceramic cladding provides better scratch resistance, and ridges along the twelve sides of the bezel make it easier to grip and turn from any position. The bezel also rotates more freely, and the crown is easier to manipulate thanks to its twelve ridges and more rounded shape.

A loupe at 6 o’clock magnifies the date, making it more legible. The loupe is incorporated on the underside of the sapphire crystal, which means the surface remains perfectly smooth to the touch.

In order to provide better visual coherence with the bezel, eight of the twelve hour markers have been given a new octagonal shape.

To provide maximum legibility in deep water, the design of the hour hand has been modified; its new sword shape clearly distinguishes it from the slimmer minutes hand. The use of differentiating colours also improves readability: the hour hand and markers are filled with green Super-LumiNova®, while the minutes hand is coated with blue Super-LumiNova®. The ability to see all the different elements at a glance is particularly important now that the Aquaracer Professional 300 is capable of descending to depths of up to 300m.

The folding clasp is secured by two safety pushpieces.

Eight new references

Of the eight new models, six come with a steel case and bracelet, complete with dials in silver, black and blue. All of these colours are available in case diameters of both 36 and 43 mm.

But a fourth colour – green – has also been added. This latest shade is only available in the 43 mm version, however, paired with a titanium case for increased strength.

To add even more variety to the collection, TAG Heuer is introducing one final 43 mm watch in titanium: the Aquaracer Professional 300 Tribute to Ref. 844. This piece, in a limited edition of 844 in reference to the Heuer Ref. 844, the brand’s original dive watch, pays homage to the styling of the original timepiece, with a red 24-hour scale on the dial, and a vintage colour for the hands and indexes. To add a modern touch to the watch, the manufacture has provided a rubber strap, with perforations to allow water to drain through. The perforations are octagonal, in an echo of the bezel and index shape.

With all these modern touches, 2021 is clearly going to be a big year for the Aquaracer!
