Press release

For the very first time, the Vulcain watch manufacturer is associating its name with the prestigious “Jazz Classics & Recitals” concert series, which welcomes to Switzerland a dozen of the world's finest artists in the field of jazz – a musical genre that shares a number of important values with the brand from Le Locle.

Vulcain has found its musical alter ego! “Jazz Classics & Recitals” is a series of concerts bringing together the greatest jazzmen and jazzwomen in the world. From October 2010 and through to May 14th 2011, seven Swiss cities will be hosting stellar names from the jazz world such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Esperanza Spalding, Sonny Rollins, Jan Garbarek, Richard Galliano, Nigel Kennedy and Chucho Valdes – in some cases for their only concert in Switzerland. These exceptional top-flight events are intended not only for out and out devotees, but also for a broad audience. Enabling as many people as possible to discover excellence is also the avowed ambition of the Vulcain fine watchmaking manufacturer, which is delighted to be associated for the first time, alongside Crédit Suisse, with the prestigious “Jazz Classics & Recitals” cycle of concerts.

Jazz Classics & Recitals Program

22 concerts in Switzerland

22 different performances will take place in Zurich, Lucern, Bern, St. Gallen, Basle, Geneva and La Chaux-de- Fonds. While these are undoubtedly very special events, the concerts given within the framework of “Jazz Classics & Recitals” are not reserved exclusively for discerning connoisseurs, but for a broad audience with a penchant for jazz. That was also what appealed to Vulcain. The most remarkable contemporary jazz musicians give concerts governed by standards very similar to those of classical music. That implies a “classic” medium or large-sized concert hall with excellent acoustic qualities, such as the Tonhalle in Zurich or Geneva's Victoria Hall.

Such is also the spirit of Vulcain watches: virtuosity for an open-minded audience, but not intended only for specialists. This ability to appeal well beyond a circle of existing enthusiasts has always been an integral part of the history of Vulcain watches. The history of jazz is pervaded by this same quality. Both give rise to encounters between art and technique, between natural gifts and hard work, between skill and virtuosity.

The heyday of jazz and Vulcain

In parallel with the heyday of jazz, Vulcain wrote some of the finest pages in its history between 1948 and 1968. Founded in 1858, the watch manufacturer in Le Locle designed, developed and produced the first genuinely functional mechanical alarm wristwatch, equipped with the legendary Cricket movement. This was made possible after the breakthrough innovation in 1947, when for the very first time, watchmakers and scientists succeeded in making a mechanical alarm wristwatch that was powerful enough to really awaken its owner. It was to become “The Presidents' Watch”, worn by such American statesmen as Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Johnson. Barack Obama also has a Vulcain Cricket watch engraved with his name.

Given that the brand is currently regaining its rightful place within the select circle of the finest watch manufacturers, it was entirely natural for it to associate this renewal with a musical world that made an indelible imprint on the 20 most prolific years in its own history. Vulcain is therefore legitimately proud to be joining Crédit Suisse in supporting the “Jazz Classics & Recitals” concert series. Prompted by the same winning mind-set, the famous company from Le Locle and this prestigious set of events definitely have a great deal in common. Long live jazz!
