Astronomia Solar Zodiac - Jacob & Co.

Our universe depicted in precious stones.

We have already seen numerous interpretations on the Astronomia theme and there seems to be no let-up in Jacob Arabo’s creativity as far as this playful collection is concerned. The Astronomia Solar line is all about putting the sun in its rightful place, at the centre of our universe and thus at the centre of the dial, in the form of a 1.5-carat Jacob cut® citrine. The special cut developed by the brand consists of 288 individual facets and gives the stone a truly spherical appearance.

In this new model, there is an extra feature on the movement in addition to the three arms of the movement. These three arms carry the hour and minute subdial (with a patented differential mechanism that keeps it vertical), the globe and the flying tourbillon carriage – both of which rotate about their own axis in 60 seconds. The new feature is a separate frame mounted on the central axis bearing three more Jacob cut® stones in amethyst, topaz and peridot. This assembly completes one full revolution of the dial every 10 minutes. In turn, the dial base in aventurine, which features seven planets in hemispherical precious stones (White Granite for Mercury, Rhodonite for Venus, Red Jasper for Mars, Pietersite for Jupiter, Tiger Eye for Saturn, Blue Calcite for Uranus and Lapis Lazuli for Neptune) performs one full counter-clockwise revolution every 10 minutes, making for a scene that is in permanent, rapid motion.

To reinforce the astronomical and celestial nature of this piece, the hour and minute dial in blue PVD features 12 gold-plated signs of the zodiac, with the time displayed by rose-gold hands to complement the 43.4mm rose-gold case. The timekeeping functions are powered by the exclusive Jacob & Co. manually-wound JCAM19 calibre. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, this lightweight movement in titanium offers 48 hours of power reserve and comes with exquisite finishing. Given the imposing domed sapphire crystal, with its lateral apertures preventing the use of a traditional crown, the watch is wound and the time is set by means of two 18-carat rose-gold bows integrated into the case back.
