The Geneva-based Manufacture, a newcomer to the SIHH, presents a sampling of its models as a dress rehearsal before the big performance at Baselworld. The releases on show are two colourful new interpretations of its Galet!

On a purely technical level, Laurent Ferrier is announcing the integration of its Tourbillon Double Hairspring in the Galet Classic Square Tourbillon. As far as new releases are concerned, for its Galet “Boréal”, Laurent Ferrier revisits the Art Deco aesthetic in its contemporary 41x41 mm case. As always with this particular watchmaker, it’s the subtle details and nuances that make all the difference. Firstly in terms of volume: this new Galet Square Boréal features a raised chapter ring shaped like its name. Secondly, in the area of finishes: the dial is graced with a vertical satin-brushed finish making a pleasing contrast with the concentrically snailed small seconds subdial. And lastly as far as colours are concerned, with the green Superluminova standing out vividly against the slate-grey dial backdrop.

The second generation of this model launched in 2015 thus represents a fairly well-marked aesthetic evolution. More modern and thoroughly revamped, it treats the model to a whole new face. Its “sector-type” dial typical of the 1930s offers an appealing blend of vintage touches and a highly contemporary appearance. Its leather and composite strap topped with green Superluminova also gives a more dynamic twist compared with previous versions. Two variations will be available with a choice of green or beige luminescence.

The blue travels of Monsieur Ferrier
The second new model presented by the Manufacture in Geneva is the Traveller Globe Night Blue. It embodies a combination of the original Laurent Ferrier case (Galet, 2010), the 2013 model (Traveller) and the 2015 version (Globe), of which the dial has been redesigned to create this 2016 model.

This dial is indeed one of the most sophisticated aesthetic expressions of the expertise cultivated by Laurent Ferrier. The dial centre is adorned with a convex planisphere depicting the five continents in painted 18K white gold, surrounded by blue enamel. The latter area portraying the seas and oceans is crafted using the champlevé technique that entails hollowing out recesses in the material that are filled with enamel. The edges of the continents slope gently down towards the coastlines, displaying various shades of blue.

The new version is graced with fascinating finishing variations. The continents themselves are now also painted, thus creating the effect of a “planisphere by night”. Moreover, so as to highlight the cities, Laurent Ferrier has opted to represent them by tiny gold dots, like a night-time view of the Earth from space.
