Letter from the Editor: What Will Media Become?

2026 marks our 25th anniversary, and the only thing that is constant in the media landscape is change. I feel like we live in the best of times and the best of worlds – and that we have more opportunities than ever.

In November 2025 I started the challenge of a lifetime. Because I never believed in status quo.  As deputy editor-in-chief of Worldtempus I was given the huge and wonderful challenge of bringing the watch world’s first website into its next phase. In its 25 years of existence (Worldtempus is really the OG of online watch media!) it has become a steadily cruising ship. It would have been easy to just remain on the captain’s bridge sipping a glass of champagne and doing good enough. Nah, not for me. Even though I love champagne. So, here are some of the things that we are introducing in 2026:

- Biweekly op-eds. Starting in February, we will publish persuasive opinion articles from people in the watch eco-system. We will feature distinct viewpoints that will suggest solutions or new perspectives on issues and current events. We will have CEOs, designers, watchmakers, collectors and scientists that will argue for a better watch world. They will discuss topics such as artificial intelligence, the responsibility of the collector, brand resurrections, Swiss Made, sustainability, and much more.

- Worldtempus After Hours Bar. Every month I will conduct 20-minute live interviews with some of our op-ed writers at a bar in Geneva. These will be informal get-togethers where everybody from CEOs to watch lovers are welcome. Yes, you too. Invites will be sent out, and in case we don’t have your email (feel free to write me), we will also make open calls published on our site and social media. Keep an eye out from mid-February.

- Exploring AI for creative purposes. Sometimes I have felt that there is a gap between what my brain envisions and what is possible with physical tools. I have often referred to myself as an old-school analogue guy, and nobody is more surprised than I am to learn that AI can potentially bridge that gap between my brain and reality. Therefore, we are exploring new possibilities with some of the world’s best artists of this new métier. Will this take over the role of what the photoshoot used to be? I don’t know – and a photoshoot is something else. If all goes well, this exploration will also start in Q2 – let me know if you are interested in being a pioneer.

– Avoiding AI for non-creative purposes. Since media is about humans describing something to many other humans, with a human perspective, why would you want to read machine-written stuff?  As with anything, AI is a tool. But so often it is factually wrong! Even though I am sure this will improve in the future, I am scared about what today’s factual faults will do for future historians. How are they going to separate the truth from published documents featuring AI lies thanks to the technology’s teething problems?

- Celebrate our anniversary. Our founding fathers and supportive brands were pioneers. Truly. 25 years ago, most people accessed the internet with dial up-modems, and yet Mr. Tortella and Mr. Pittard had the vision of online potential. On the 25th of every month we will have celebratory articles. For these subjects we have put together an amazing international think-tank with some of our favorite contributors in Geneva, LA, Paris, and St. Kitts, while also taking advantage of Worldtempus being here in Geneva.

- Clarifying our role, yet never standing still. Step-by-step the written and filmed content on Worldtempus will improve. We will clarify our storytelling, and we will have more defined formats. As a reader –—and as a partner— you should know what you get at Worldtempus. But rest assured, part of that will be surprise. Because I don’t believe in the status quo.

What do you think that watch media should be? I look forward to hearing from you: anders.modig@gmtpublishing.com
