When I was a kid, I loved every kind of sport. Anything that made me run, jump, sweat or scream (or all four) was fine with me, as is true of most kids. One day, I was doing my homework and caught, out of the corner of my eye, Andre Agassi on TV. It was the final of some important tournament, and the stadium — to say nothing of the court itself — crackled with an extremely tense energy. Something clicked in me, and just a few minutes later I told my parents I wanted to start playing tennis.
I began training with a coach, as well as with my brother and friends. I’d invite anyone to join me on the court. What I love most about tennis is the impression it gives of suspending time. When I play, everything stops for me; the only thing I’m aware of is my opponent and my racquet.
Now that I think back on it, too, one of the reasons I knew I wanted to play tennis was all the beautiful women in the stands at that Agassi match. They were utterly hypnotized by the players. That is, I have to admit, one of the reasons I still play.
