Manifesta has commissioned 30 international artists to explore and interpret the biennale’s theme “What People Do for Money – Some Joint Ventures”. Panerai has collaborated with one of the biennale’s artists, Jon Kessler, an American painter and sculptor who through his creativity interprets the metier of the watchmaker: he will present the artwork “The World is Cuckoo (Clock)”. Uniquely for this project, the Manifattura di Alta Orologeria Panerai, based in Neuchâtel, has developed a special version of the P.2005/T movement, one of the most complicated and refined mechanical calibres ever created in-house by Panerai. The latter is part of the clock conceived by Kessler.
The P.2005/T hand-wound movement features the special tourbillon regulator patented by Panerai and appears here in the sophisticated skeletonised version, with titanium bridges and plates. The fine work of skeletonising enables the fascinating details of the movement to be admired, such as the winding and unwinding of the spring inside each barrel, the intricate interconnection of the wheel work and in particular the rotation of the tourbillon cage. The power reserve generated by the calibre is transferred to a pinion which is directly linked to the transmission shaft of the work of Jon Kessler. Hence the watchmaker’s craft lies at the core, becoming the catalyst for the piece with its power providing the beating heart that gives life to Kessler’s mechanical creation.
“The world is Cuckoo (Clock)” is on show for the entire duration of Manifesta 11 at Les Ambassadeurs, Bahnhofstrasse 64, one of Panerai official dealer in Zurich.
