To celebrate its 270th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin presents a traveling exhibition that showcases its relentless pursuit of horological excellence. Technical innovations, creativity, and expertise as much artisanal as artistic, combine and interact to recount the history of one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world.

It is not easy to summarize in three rooms the breadth of history, the richness of expertise, and the technical prowess embodied by a brand like Vacheron Constantin. However, the exhibition The Quest succeeds perfectly in immersing the visitor in the world of the Manufacture with precision and poetry.

Abundance of Key Dates

The journey through time begins with a dive into the house's archives. The 400 meters of pages preserved by the brand cannot, of course, be displayed. Nor can the 1700 heritage pieces. But a poetic representation of sheets flying from a large ancient — yet digital — book offers a vision of the prolific history of the manufacture. Important dates scroll by with an aerial wave of the hand in front of the work. Visitors are thus amazed by the first pocket watch made in 1755 by Jean-Marc Vacheron himself. As a cherry on top, the watch is visible under a glass dome, with its fusée-chain, original protective glass (!) and the master watchmaker's signature engraved on the caliber. In 1819, the advent of the still-relevant motto, "Do better if possible, which is always possible," emerged. It stems from a letter written by François Constantin to his illustrious companion, Jean-Marc Vacheron, during a trip to Italy. A gracefully flying sheet showcases the house's first boutique, located at the Tour de l'île, in 1906. The year 1955 recalls the appearance of the world's thinnest watch, which has become a characteristic of some Vacheron Constantin collections even today. Then the pivotal 1977, marking the release of the now-iconic 222 for the 222nd anniversary, signifying (along with other illustrious houses) the birth of the sports-chic watch segment with an integrated bracelet. To celebrate its 250th anniversary, the Tour de l’Île of 2005 was unveiled as the most complicated watch in the world, with no fewer than 16 horological complications, and was awarded the Aiguille d’Or at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève that same year.

Artistic Creativity and Craftsmanship

Already captivated by the succession of significant dates, the visitor then immerses themselves in the pure creativity of the artistic crafts that Vacheron Constantin masterfully excels in. Cloisonné enamel, plique-à-jour, champlevé, and ultra-detailed miniature painting are represented on the sumptuous dials crafted by the manufacture. Even more specialized and rare, the grisaille technique, layering white Limoges enamel over a black enamel background, creates a striking gradient. Or the figurative guilloché mastered by a single master guillocheur, whose unique work can be admired on the dial of the exceptional timepiece Les Cabinotiers, Hommage à la Tour de l’île, presented in 2025. The eyes sparkle at such artisanal beauty, further embodied by the Kallista of 1979, which required no less than 6000 hours to set its 118 emerald-cut diamonds.

Technical Excellence

The exhibition would not be complete without a chapter on the technical achievements accomplished by the Manufacture since its inception. Whether it is the famous pocket watch chronograph made for James Ward Packard in 1918 or the latest creation, Les Cabinotiers - The Berkley Grand Complication, with its 63 complications, including a unique Chinese perpetual calendar, Vacheron Constantin showcases its technical excellence, the result of its motto, far from being overused, "Do better if possible, and that is always possible."

The exhibition, having already traveled through Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Shanghai, is settling in Geneva, at Pont de la Machine, from September 15 to 28. A must-see for all lovers of fine watchmaking who wish to (re)discover what horological excellence means to Vacheron Constantin.
