Extended power reserve has been a key element of Panerai’s identity since the mid-1950s, a legacy underscored by the use of the hand-wound Angelus® SF240 movement. The dedication to extended autonomy is testified by Giuseppe Panerai’s initial commitment to pursue the highest standards in the instruments supplied to the military forces. When he had to select the movement for the GPF 2/56, he sought a high-quality mechanism with an improved performance and he identified a better solution from one of the leading makers of table clocks sold at the family’s Orologeria Svizzera store: Angelus, owned by Stolz Frères S.A. The company produced a particularly large hand-wound movement (16 lignes) with a power reserve of around 200 hours, allowing it to run for eight days on a single wind: the SF 240 calibre. This pursuit of innovation continued with the P.2002 in 2005, the first movement from the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, which also featured an eight-day power reserve achieved through a historically patented three-spring barrel design. Panerai then launched the P.2003 in 2007, the first automatic movement conceived and manufactured in-house with a ten-day (240-hour) power reserve. Now, Panerai elevates the standard once more with an extraordinary 31-day power reserve.
This 31-day power reserve, a first for the Maison, is the culmination of seven years of dedicated research by Panerai’s Laboratorio di Idee. This team, an integral part of the Research & Development department at the Neuchâtel Manufacture, upholds Panerai’s legacy by consistently elevating technical performance. With PAM01631, Panerai remains true to its commitment to creating clear and intuitive instruments, even within the high- complication portfolio, staying true to the original purpose of delivering elevated legibility, and performance through functional design innovations.

The PAM01631 embodies the Luminor’s iconic design within a 44mm Panerai Goldtech™ case, showcasing advanced mechanics. Manufactured from Panerai Goldtech™ – a special alloy composed of gold and copper, with a touch of platinum and silver for enhanced resistance – the case boasts a distinctive red hue and elevated durability, extending the timepiece’s lifetime.
This timepiece is powered by the newly developed P.2031/S, a hand-wound skeleton movement, revealing the intricate mechanics within. The groundbreaking 31-day power reserve calibre is a direct result of Panerai’s commitment to pushing horological boundaries. Born from the Laboratorio di Idee’s rigorous experimentation with extended power reserve calibres, this movement provides an unprecedented month-long power reserve, underscoring the vital role of Panerai’s R&D Department in spearheading the Maison’s horological breakthroughs. Panerai’s calibre design philosophy centers on the strategic use of multiple barrels arranged in series, a configuration that maximizes power reserve. This approach ensures both efficiency and longevity, as Panerai barrels operate with a ‘low torque’ and rapid rotation, minimizing friction and stress on pivots. Comprising 276 components and 25 jewels, the month-long power autonomy is achieved through this sophisticated system of four barrels, housing a combined 3.3 meters of mainsprings. This technical arrangement is the result of a significant challenge undertaken by the R&D department, which successfully delivered a system that enables a consistent and controlled release of power. This innovation allows the watch to run continuously for 31 days with just 128 crown turns, eliminating the need for specialized winding tools. Unlike other extended power reserve movements, Panerai’s solution offers a more direct, reliable, and user-friendly experience.
This new timepiece also includes remarkable technical achievements, with its patent-pending Torque Limiter system being a central innovation. This development is manufactured to deliver unparalleled precision and reliability.
The Torque Limiter intelligently optimizes the watch’s performance. It achieves this by selecting an ideal 31-day operational window from a potential 36-day power reserve. By cutting the top and the bottom of the torque barrel, the movement delivers enhanced chronometry, ensuring the watch remains consistent throughout its 31 days of operation. This ingenious system also maintains optimal tension within the mainsprings, safeguarding the movement from potential damage, extending its longevity, and further boosting its precision – all critical achievements in mechanical watch durability. After 31 days, the movement automatically halts, even with remaining power reserve, a deliberatedesign choice that further protects the intricate mechanism and preserves its long- term performance. Complementing these advancements is another notable innovation: a patented spring geometry and jumping hour hand mechanism. This design is a true achievement in user convenience, allowing for quick and precise time adjustments without disturbing the minute and second hands, making time-setting effortless and efficient.
The skeletonized structure provides a captivating multi-dimensional view of the P.2031/S movement, showcasing the exposed barrels and the technical mastery of their creation, an effect amplified by the sapphire crystal case back. Panerai’s patented polarized date disc, visible solely through the 3 o’clock window, cleverly integrates functionality without disrupting the open-worked architecture. A curved power reserve indicator, precisely aligned with the calibre’s perimeter, offers a clear and intuitive gauge of the remaining energy, whether winding or wearing the watch. The rehaut is subtly marked with only the 12 and 6 numerals, complemented by indexes and hands finished with white Super-LumiNova® X2 for optimal legibility in low light, accented with golden surrounds.
The new PAM01631 is water-resistant up to 10 bar (approximately 100 meters) and, like all Panerai watches, has undergone rigorous testing. This includes exceeding its depth rating by 25% through pressure tests in air chambers, followed by comprehensive water tests to ensure reliability.
The new timepiece is equipped with the new Panerai Goldtech™ folding clasp with PAM Click Release System™. This innovative clasp ensures the watch remains securely in place, even when being removed, reducing the risk of accidental drops. Furthermore, the integrated PAM Click Release System™ allows for effortless, tool-free changes between the elegant black alligator strap and the more casual rubber strap. PAM01631 is a limited edition of 200 pieces, available exclusively in Panerai boutiques.
