In July this year, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, the iconic music mogul and renowned watch collector, officially invested in Hong Kong-based Wristcheck, a burgeoning luxury watch marketplace. This partnership not only marks a significant milestone for Wristcheck but also highlights the intersection of culture and commerce in the evolving world of luxury watches.
For Austen Chu, co-founder and CEO of Wristcheck, this moment is nothing short of surreal. He says, “Growing up, Jay-Z’s music introduced me to brands like Audemars Piguet—it spurred my passion for watches and ultimately my foray into this world professionally, so having him on board as an investor is mind blowing. I don’t think my 15-year-old self would’ve believed it. This partnership feels like a full-circle moment, and it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time.”
Wristcheck has rapidly established itself as an industry leader since its inception in 2020, attracting a diverse community of watch enthusiasts. Chu says, “We’ve experienced significant growth since day one, and that momentum hasn’t slowed down—even before Jay-Z came into the picture. Having him on board is incredible and will undoubtedly help strengthen the trust and reputation we’ve built.” In 2023, Wristcheck experienced a 300 per cent increase in total transaction volume. In the first four months of 2024, the platform, which has a boutique as well in Hong Kong’s Central business district, reported a 588 per cent year-over-year growth in online commerce alone, with an average order value of US$22,000.
The platform is built on the principles of transparency, inclusivity and technology, ensuring that buyers and sellers know exactly what to expect. Each watch is authenticated through a proprietary method, fostering a sense of security among users. “When I started Wristcheck, I envisioned partnering with influential figures but I didn’t expect it to happen so quickly. It’s a testament to our fantastic team and everything we’ve accomplished in just three and a half years. But we’re just getting started—there’s so much more to build,” Chu says.
Part of Wristcheck’s appeal lies in its commitment to creating a diverse community. The platform caters to a younger audience, with 70 per cent of its users under the age of 35, and has facilitated high-value transactions, including sales exceeding US$1 million. As the platform prepares to launch its highly anticipated collector’s app later this year, Chu says he’s excited: “There’s a lot to look forward to, so definitely stay tuned. Our app is currently in beta and we’re thrilled to bring it to the world soon. This app is everything I’ve ever wanted as a collector and I believe it’s going to be revolutionary.”
Jay-Z has a well-documented history of investing in diverse businesses, leveraging his celebrity status and entrepreneurial acumen to drive growth and innovation. One notable venture is Roc Nation, a full-service entertainment company he founded in 2008. Roc Nation has not only represented some of the biggest names in music but has also expanded into sports management, fashion and philanthropy, showcasing the musician’s ability to create a multifaceted brand.
Other significant investments include luxury champagne brand Armand de Brignac, which he acquired in 2014, and D’Usse, a cognac brand he co-owns, solidifying his reputation as a savvy beverage investor. Jay-Z’s investments not only provide financial backing but also enhance brand visibility and credibility, contributing to the success of the businesses he partners with.
As he steps into the world of luxury watches with Wristcheck, Jay-Z’s previous experiences in building and promoting brands will likely play a crucial role in elevating its profile and expanding its reach within the watch community. “The incredible ecosystem Jay-Z has built at Roc Nation perfectly aligns with what we are building here at Wristcheck—the watch world of tomorrow. I am beyond excited for the future that lies ahead,” Chu says.
As the platform gears up for its next phase of growth, it stands ready to inspire and elevate the watch culture for a new generation.
