Any discussion of métiers d’art naturally begins with Jaquet Droz. At its workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the brand now produces only one-of-a-kind timepieces, each featuring a hand-crafted dial brought to life by a multitude of artisans who transform every client’s unique vision into reality.
Among its latest creations, the Petite Heure Minute Red Gold "Japanese Garden" stands out as one of the most spectacular. The engraving on mother-of-pearl is executed with extraordinary finesse. Every detail of the Japanese temple’s balustrade is visible, forming the backdrop for 25 hand-applied appliqués. A tiny mother-of-pearl cabochon gives the lantern the illusion of emerging from the dial itself. Every ripple on the water is rendered with striking precision, while the gold branches of the cherry tree appear to sway gently in the breeze. The result is craftsmanship of exceptional realism.
Most Historic: Breguet
Credit where credit is due—and in this case, to Breguet. Two hundred and fifty years ago, the legendary watchmaker developed decorative finishes that embodied what we now call métiers d’art, although the term did not yet exist.
Today, the Manufacture carries that heritage forward, remaining true to Abraham-Louis Breguet’s vision while continually renewing its approach. The new Marine Équation Marchante 5887, featuring luminescent paint applied to sapphire, is proof of this. This technique, combined for example with the master's signature executed using a pantograph, as seen on the Souscription Watch, establishes Breguet as the enduring guardian of artisanal excellence craftsmanship.
Most Understated: Chopard
Chopard seldom highlights its métiers d’art. That discretion may reflect the personality of its CEO, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele. Nevertheless, the brand regularly introduces original dial motifs and reinterprets centuries-old craftsmanship. In short, it continues to innovate.
This is particularly evident in the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 – Straw Marquetry Edition, unveiled at the latest Watches and Wonders. Each strand of rye straw is individually worked by hand, assembled into a honeycomb pattern, then dyed and stabilized. The result is nothing short of stunning.
Most Expressive: Vacheron Constantin
"Métiers d’Art" is the name of one of Vacheron Constantin’s collections—a clear statement of the brand’s commitment to preserving and celebrating this longstanding artisanal tradition.
The Manufacture has created countless timepieces showcasing métiers d’art. Among its most recent is the Homage to Great Civilizations collection, developed in partnership with the Louvre. Particularly noteworthy is the use of glyptic art—the carving of hard materials such as stone, crystal, or gemstones to create intaglios or cameos. With Hommage aux Grandes Civilisations, the array of artistic disciplines seems almost limitless. in the four timepieces that are in dialogue with Ancient Greece (800 BC to 146 BC), the New Kingdom of Egypt (c. 1550–1077 BCE) , the Neo-Assyrian Empire ((911–612 BCE), and the Roman empire (27 BC to 476 AD). The end result fulfills a simple promise: museum-worthy works of art that can be worn on the wrist.
Most Innovative: De Bethune
No Top 5 can ever claim to be exhaustive. It would have been impossible to conclude this list without mentioning Patek Philippe’s unique pieces and exhibitions entirely dedicated to métiers d’art, Louis Vuitton’s unique creations—often pocket watches—or the increasingly expressive dials Rolex has introduced in recent years.
Instead, the final place goes to a more discreet, yet equally innovative name: De Bethune. Revered by collectors of independent fine watchmaking, the brand continues to explore new artistic territory. It has developed its own distinctive visual language. With its Starry Varius collection, De Bethune has notably pioneered a new way of depicting the night sky, using tiny gold pins individually driven into the dial to recreate a star-filled firmament. It is patient, rigorous craftsmanship, created to stand the test of time.
