Compact yet powerful. Small yet dense. Discreet yet highly efficient. A micro-rotor is expected to reconcile a series of apparent contradictions. Despite its reduced size, it is asked to perform as effectively as an oscillating weight four times larger. Although research and development continue to improve its performance, the laws of physics still impose their limits.
Micro-rotors are now available in small formats (averaging 2.5mm in diameter) as well as larger versions (around 3.5mm). Their construction is anything but flat: like a conventional oscillating weight, the outer edge is thicker—and therefore heavier—than the center, increasing rotational efficiency. From a technical standpoint, the optimal configuration places the micro-rotor inline with the barrel and the balance wheel.
It is ideally suited to powering a first level of complications, such as a GMT or date display, but becomes less effective as additional complications are introduced. Impulsion SA addressed this limitation by using a dual micro-rotor system in the Louis Moinet Sonnerie au Passage, an approach later adopted by Tec Ébauches. However, the concept of the dual micro-rotor has not been developed any further.
The Most Iconic: Laurent Ferrier
When Laurent Ferrier launched his brand in 2009, and the very first model, the Galet Classic Tourbillon Double Spiral, was released the following year. The message could hardly have been clearer. After spending three decades at Patek Philippe, the watchmaker chose the micro-rotor for its understated nature and, above all, because it leaves the movement entirely visible. Patek Philippe itself had already established the micro-rotor as a defining feature with the introduction of Caliber 240 in 1977, measuring just 2.4 mm thick. The Geneva manufacture continues to rely on this architecture today.
The Latest Technical Development: Renaud Tixier
The platinum weight at the center of the oscillating weight is "helped" by a central spring, which amplifies the energy, thus getting an efficiency that goes beyond what a normal micro rotor can do. This patent-pending system in the first watch from the brand, funded in 2024, has been referred to as spinner-thruster or dancer, by its inventor Dominique Renaud. He also claims that this system will be able to power heavier complications than what has thus far been possible for micro-rotors.
The Thinnest: Piaget and Bvlgari
The micro-rotor was originally conceived to reduce movement thickness. By integrating the rotor within the caliber itself, it eliminates the additional layer required by a traditional oscillating weight. Achieving greater slimness has been its primary purpose since the first designs appeared in the mid-1950s, and it remains the main reason Piaget continues to champion the concept. Today, the manufacture employs the micro-rotor throughout its 12XX caliber family (1290, 1270, 1205, 1255, etc.). Bvlgari follows the same philosophy with the Octo Finissimo, whose movement manufacturer, Concepto, also relies on the micro-rotor to create the Roman jeweler's ultra-thin automatic watches.
The Boldest: Roger Dubuis
Roger Dubuis has redefined not only the mechanics of the micro-rotor but also its visual identity. The Geneva manufacture integrates it into highly skeletonized movements, shaping it as a star and pairing it with multiple balance wheels or various tourbillons. The result is a striking and highly accomplished expression of the micro-rotor's potential, demonstrating, just as ultra-thin watches do, the remarkable versatility of this architecture.
The Most Contemporary: Speake-Marin
Speake-Marin is one of the few fully independent brands to own its movement manufacturer, Le Cercle des Horlogers, which also supplies movements to other brands. The company has made the micro-rotor one of its specialties. As a result, it features prominently throughout the collection, showcased in bold, contemporary, and colorful designs. It powers Speake-Marin's best-selling Ripples as well as several of the brand's tourbillon models.
Beyond these examples, the micro-rotor also appears in selected timepieces by Chopard, Girard-Perregaux, Richard Mille, Hermès, Parmigiani Fleurier, Panerai, Cartier (Santos-Dumont), Bell & Ross (using Vaucher-based movements), and independent watchmaker Romain Gauthier.
