In the 18th century, Ferdinand Berthoud designed genuine marine chronometers. Among them, there is the Longitude Clock n°30 which recently joined the collection of Mr. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele at the L.U.CEUM in Fleurier.
Ferdinand Berthoud made a series of five marine chronometers between 1778 and 1782, the only reference allowing to calculate longitude. The longitude clock n° 30 is the only one that still has its original box.
The end result of this restoration, guided by the cabinetmaker Mr. Brossy, is a marine chronometer in the same condition as that delivered by Ferdinand Berthoud in 1782. This masterpiece represents one of the highlights of the Berthoud collection at the museum.
