When Haute Horlogerie meets Haute Cuisine

WorldTempus’ Sophie Furley was the lucky guest at a star-studded dinner to celebrate the Michelin Guide Suisse 2022 winners recently. When we say “star-studded” we aren’t talking about Hollywood celebrities, but chefs who have earned their prestigious gastronomical Michelin stars.

The dinner followed a day of awards and announcements that saw the nomination of 36 new starred restaurants in Switzerland, a new three-star Michelin restaurant, and 11 new Green Star restaurants awarded for their environmentally friendly gastronomy, bringing the total of Swiss recommended restaurants to 546, of which 138 sport the famous Michelin stars.

The Blancpain Connection

Blancpain announced its partnership with the famous gastronomical guide in February 2020, just as Switzerland went into lockdown. The Michelin Guide Suisse 2022 Awards were the first time that the watch brand and the restaurant guide could celebrate in style, and what better occasion than the announcement of the Michelin Guide Suisse 2022 winners?

Nothing New

The Swiss watch brand’s connection to the world of Haute Cuisine is not new. Blancpain watches have been adorning the wrists of famous chefs for over three decades including French chefs Paul Bocuse, Joël Robuchon, and Julien Royer; as well as Spanish chef Marin Berasategui and Switzerland’s Edgard Bovier, all of who have Been awarded stars by the Michelin Guide.

Shared Values of Excellence

The partnership sees Blancpain take on the role of official timekeeper of renowned culinary contests as well as continue its reviewing of the world’s finest restaurants in its corporate magazine Lettre du Brassus. Today, this connection between Haute Horlogerie and Haute Cuisine goes even further as the two big names intend to work together in promoting their shared values of excellence, passion, and expertise.

This long-term and wide-ranging partnership will also enable Blancpain to join the Michelin Guide at over 20 events and guides celebrating Haute Cuisine over the coming year, from Shanghai to Paris and New York to Tokyo to name just a few locations.

A Night in Lausanne

The first of these events took place at the EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne where the school invited four different award-winning chefs to take over its kitchen to celebrate the day’s awards. Aided and assisted by the first-year students at this prestigious school, the evening was a celebration of gastronomy at its finest.

Eight courses were created by Peter Knogl from the three-star Cheval Blanc restaurant, Jeroen Achtien, from the two-star restaurant Sens in Vitznauerhof, Cédric Bourassin and from EHL’s one-star restaurant Le Berceau des Sens, and its EHL pastry chef Julien Boutonnet who won the Meilleur Ouvrier de France Pâtissier award in 2015. The experience was a delight for the senses as guests tasted dishes such as Sea bass ceviche, langoustine tartar, scallop carpaccio, turbot from Bretagne, and pike perch aged in Koji for nine days.

Discipline, Creativity, and Authenticity

Watchmaking and cooking may appear to be worlds apart, but they share many values, such as rigorous discipline, creativity, and authenticity. They also both assemble a wealth of components and ingredients to create their works of art, and understand the importance of chronometric precision. This new partnership promises to be a great one for the Le Brassus watch brand, and an amazing culinary treat for anyone who gets to attend one of their events!
