Focus on the Dragon Automaton

Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum: these names alone are enough to immerse us in the fantastic universe of The Lord of the Rings. But without John Howe, less known to the general public, the cinematographic adaptation of Tolkien’s trilogy would undoubtedly have been very different. This prodigy of the fantasy world, who participated in the artistic design of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: the Rings of Power, has been living in Neuchâtel for over 30 years. This was a unique opportunity for Jaquet Droz, which worked hand in hand with the creator to bring this dreamy automaton to life. The dragon’s backbone undulates, as does its tail; its eye and jaw open and close; its tongue moves; its crest rises and falls while its claws grasp a rotating stone. A sight rendered made all the more fascinating by the fact that this incredibly complex timepiece is entirely customizable, from the 43mm case to the dial and the engravings of the dragon’s scales. Simply unique!
