Wrist Stories The Experts' Dream Watch

The Question is Simple: What is Your Dream Watch? Six Influential Players in the Watchmaking World Told us Which One they Would Like To See on Their Wrist One Day

Philipp Man: Co-founder Chronext

“I am a big fan of vintage watches! My dream watch is the Rolex Daytona with the reference 6265 in gold. Only about 2,000 of them were produced in gold between 1971 and 1988. Also, the 6265 was the last one with a manual winding movement besides the reference 6263. The gold color brings a certain extravagance, but the 37mm diameter and elegant proportions somewhat compensate for that effect. The 6265 can be worn on the wrist as a statement, which is at the same time an understatement thanks to the vintage look.”

“I’ve always been fascinated by space travel and out-worldly things. I knew the MB&F HM6 Space Pirate was my dream watch since the moment I saw it. Its biomorphic case, spherical turbines, the flying tourbillon with its protective shield and of course the way of telling time make this timepiece look like nothing we’ve seen before… Like it came from another world.”

Hind Seddiqi: Director General of Dubai Watch Week

“Everyone knows of my love for exquisite handcrafts and my favourite movement, the minute repeater. So, it’s no surprise that my dream watch is from the Rare Handcrafts collection of Patek Philippe, 7000/50R-010 Swallows in Flight and includes both these elements. Each minute repeater is personally tested and checked by Mr. Thierry Stern, a tradition passed on by generations of the Stern family, to ensure the chiming has the “Patek Sound”. The passion and commitment towards preserving this tradition, as well as the incredible enamelling technique on this timepiece, are what I admire about this masterpiece of Haute Horloge”

Giorgia Mondani: Digital entrepreneur in the luxury watch world

“Thanks to my work I have the chance to see and wear extraordinary timepieces and I must admit I have various models written on my wish list. But if I have to mention a one and only dream watch, I must go back to one of the watches that went under the hammer in the 2006 Antiquorum Auction of “The Mondani Collection”, where my father’s collection of more than 300 Rolex watches was sold. I would love to have back in our family the “Rolex Oyster Perpetual Officially Certified Chronometer ref. 6062 Stelline”, with black diamond dial. At the time it was sold for CHF 469,700, but now it would be impossible to get it for that sum. I think it is a priceless piece.”

“A timepiece that captivated me the moment I put it on my wrist was the Little Lange 1 Moonphase. Since then, the image of this watch has remained vividly etched in my memory. It goes without saying that A. Lange & Söhne watches are completely reliable, featuring sophisticated designs and flawless engineering. The dial beautifully depicts the night sky embroidered with stars, somehow magically poetic. The subtlety of the twinkling stars, far from distracting, somehow gives me a calm, peaceful feeling. If you wear this timepiece, I'm sure you will feel just like I do wearing one on my wrist, as if you were traveling among the stars of the galaxy.”

I'm asked about the watch of my dreams, because there’s such an air of finality and ultimacy about it. It’s implied that your watch journey ends once you acquire this hallowed timepiece, and that’s never the case, is it? There’s always another watch after that one. I can at least say that the watch that’s been on my wishlist the most consistently over the last 10 years is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo in yellow gold with champagne dial. I love the idea of having the full-gold version of a watch that is renowned for jumpstarting the steel sports watch craze. There have been a few incarnations of the yellow-gold Royal Oak Jumbo – someday I’ll find the one that’s right for me.”
