After the romanticism of Valentine’s Day gifts, we turn our attention to the Chinese New Year this week.

As the launch of the eagerly-anticipated Apple Watch draws nearer, the uncertainty among Swiss watchmakers seems to grow. After TAG Heuer made it clear it was working on a smartwatch, the Swatch Group’s Nick Hayek promised that a Swatch smartwatch would be launched “in a few months”, although no official announcement has been made by the brand.

Last week the Festina Group issued a strange press release talking about patents and functions of a smartwatch movement from its Soprod subsidiary, but with no photos. With Jörg Hysek sending out 3D renderings of possible smartwatch designs in the same week, but with no concrete projects, maybe the two should team up? Those who wish to stake a claim in this already crowded market need to move fast, since Frédérique Constant will be presenting something much more concrete as early as next week. Watch this space!

This week also marks the one-month countdown to BaselWorld, and the new watches to be presented at the show continue to come in thick and fast on WorldTempus. Expect news from Eberhard & Co., Hysek and TAG Heuer on the site this week, among others.

We also continue our examination of the nitty-gritty of watchmaking with another instalment in David Chokron’s series on the different movement finishes, this time on bevelling, while Marie de Pimodan-Bugnon explains the different stone-setting techniques used in jewellery watches.
