Far form being a bargain-basement deal, Citizen’s acquisition of Frédérique Constant last week consolidates one of the industry’s recent success stories within

Last week we presented the most recent changes at the SIHH, which will undoubtedly lead to changes at Baselworld, too. One of the first such potential changes came to light after the surprise announcement that Japan’s Citizen Group had acquired the Frédérique Constant Group. Among the significant investment plans that this acquisition will help to fund is a new stand on the prime horological real estate of Hall 1.0 at Baselworld.

The April export statistics published by the Federation of the Swiss Watchmaking Industry last week confirmed the steep downwards trend in exports to China (-36%) and Hong Kong (-17%). Bad news for brands dependent on this market, but less worrying for those like Roger Dubuis who are looking more towards countries such as the USA, where exports rebounded last month (it was the only country in the top six where exports increased last month).

Against this background, it may seem amazing that TAG Heuer invited its two Chinese brand ambassadors and numerous Chinese guests to watch the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend. But TAG Heuer’s CEO Jean-Claude Biver is known for bucking trends and doing things somewhat differently to others. Find out why later this week.
