Chasing the Northern Lights - A. Lange & Söhne
The wonderful mysteries of the Northern Lights, the luminous A. Lange & Söhne watch collection.

The natural phenomenon of the Auroras occurs in very high geographical latitudes in both hemispheres, close to the geographical poles  and it is produced by the ionization of nitrogen and oxygen atoms, at the ionosphere level, when hit by the strong  Solar Wind during specific periods of the year.

Scientists in different academic disciplines have studied this wondrous event in depth, not only to understand the physical origin of the beautiful display of luminescence in the dark night sky but also to bring into our consciences the effect in the local inhabitants of the area. The actual explanation accepted thus far is that this event is only visible at these high latitudes due to the presence and orientation of Earth’s magnetic field.

A. Lange & Söhne has been inspired by the sheer beauty of the Auroras, especially those in the coast of the marvelous island of Iceland, requesting its team of researchers, micro-engineers and master watchmakers in Glashutte, Germany to create a new limited collection that recreates the luminescence of the Auroras in platinum cased A. Lange & Söhne watches while keeping all the style and elements that make these watches so special and admired amongst collectors.

The visible extravaganza of the luminescence of this collection is achieved by means of surfaces to which high performance Super-Luminova has been applied in tandem with the utilization of sapphire semi-transparent areas in the dial that allow these surfaces, such as disks, indices and moon phases, to be fully exposed to light and absorb this range of energy for future release on its display.

As a result of this innovative technical approach, the watches in the A. Lange & Söhne Lumen collection glow with an intense green color under dark conditions while retaining their well-known Saxon visual identity that is very strong in watches such as Lange 1, Lange 1 with Moon phases and the magnificent Zeitwerk, a watch capable of showing Hours and Minutes in a digital fashion with sophisticated mechanical movement.

The moon phases disk in the Lange 1 is made of a proprietary glass material that , thanks toan exclusive  vapor deposition process, is able to show with high accuracy, up to 122.6 years, the different phases of our natural satellite as well as  1,164 stars in the firmament.
