Our team of journalists gets sentimental for Geneva with the new Heritage BiCompax Annual Hometown Edition

Sophie Furley

The Carl F. Bucherer Heritage BiCompax Annual Hometown Editions are such a cool idea, you wonder why no one thought of it before. There are seven Swiss towns – Lucerne (the original hometown of the brand), Basel, Bern, Geneva (the one we got to test), St. Gallen, and Zurich. A few international cities are also available with Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Beijing, London, Mumbai, New York, and Tokyo . Each one comes with a unique coloured dial and a 3D-look engraving of a landmark from the respective city on the case back. For our Geneva edition, the timepiece comes with a burgundy coloured dial and an image of the famous jet d'eau (Geneva’s 140-metre high water fountain) on the back. The Heritage BiCompax has an eye-catching design with its inspirations from the 1950s, and the choice of colours gives each timepiece a particularly modern appeal. What better way to keep a piece of your hometown on your wrist when travelling?

Patriotism, that’s the word that comes to mind with the new Carl F. Bucherer Heritage BiCompax Annual Hometown Editions. And in three ways. First, because it celebrates (mostly) Switzerland. In fact, half of the watches pay tribute to Swiss cities, while the rest take the names of international capital cities. Secondly, the model I was lucky enough to wear was the one dedicated to Geneva, the city where I was born and raised. The skyline of my city is engraved with the famous Jet d’eau landmark on the sapphire crystal on the back of the watch. And lastly, the dial (in different gradients of colour) depicts the red colour of the city and the Swiss flag. Well, it is actually burgundy, but that is close enough for me! These are three simple reasons why I love this 41mm steel chronograph.

I have just put the new Carl F. Bucherer Heritage BiCompax Annual Hometown Edition on my wrist and I can see that this watch takes all the codes of vintage watches and successfully transforms them into something modern. The dial is smoky with different gradients of colour, passing from silver to burgundy red. The sapphire crystal is domed, like in the past. The chronograph and tachymeter scale go well together, and the date and month look good too. And, for the icing on the cake, the watch is adorned with a perforated strap, and let’s not forget the manufacture movement! The Carl F. Bucherer Heritage Bicompax Annual Hometown Edition has everything you need in a watch. The only drawback is its name. By the time the salesman introduces the watch, the customer may well have left! I am teasing, because I have a particularly long name too! That said, this long name reflects the complexity of the watch to perfection. All in all, this is a very nice timepiece that has been very well thought out and meticulously made. This limited edition of 88 pieces might just slip on my wrist and not leave!

To say that this is the ideal watch for the weekend would be an understatement. This brightly coloured chronograph (it comes in numerous other colours) evokes good times with a glass of Bordeaux, of course, but is also perfectly suited to a sporting activity, like skiing. The contrasts on the dial make the reading of the time and elapsed time very legible, and the dial also proves to be very attractive. It is one of the only watches to catch the attention of my young son Basile, who usually isn’t interested in what’s on my wrist. I smile as his gaze fixes on my wrist. Another important thing to note is that the colours change intensity according to the light and reflections, making it quite difficult to give this one back!
