Team Test: WorldTempus X Glashütte Original

This week, WorldTempus is testing not one watch but three! Here is what we thought of the three PanoMaticLunar models from Glashütte Original in silver, green, and blue

Green has been quite a trendy colour in the watchmaking world these last few years. I am not going to lie and tell you that I am getting tired of it (like everyone else) because I am not. I love this colour! And this particular shade of green on the PanoMaticLunar automatic model is outstanding. I can only imagine that this particular gradient reflects the colour of the fir trees surrounding the Glashütte Original factory in Germany as they twinkle in the sunlight. To accompany this 40mm steel watch, Glashütte Original has paired it with a brown nubuck leather strap, which suits me perfectly. You just can’t go wrong with this colour combination. It is a chic and sophisticated timepiece which could compete with any of its Swiss counterparts.

This was my first Glashütte experience. There is a beginning to everything, and this marks the first time that I have worn a Glashütte for more than a few seconds during a watch show, and I’m sold! First of all, the timepiece feels good, which is an excellent start. Its proportions and the layout of the indications on the dial respect the golden ratio, making it very harmonious. All the functions are not only useful but easy to read, especially the oversized date that immediately catches the eye. The large opening on the caseback allows an uninterrupted view on the movement with exquisite finishing that reflects the aesthetic on the front of the watch. To be honest, I would have happily kept this Glashütte PanoMaticLunar a little longer, but it is already time to hand it to another team member.

A day with the PanoMaticLunar is going to get you a lot of attention if you live in a world where people are interested in watches! I have lost count of the number of compliments I have received about this “beautiful watch”! The elegant dial is as blue as a summer’s night sky and the harmonious arrangement of all the functions are undoubtedly a major factor in the success of this model. When it comes to the design of both the dial and the movement that beats behind the scenes, the German brand has scrupulously respected the rule of the Golden Ratio. The result is a real feast for the eyes with the useful big date, hours, minutes, small seconds, and moon phase indication. The pleasure continues when the watch is removed to admire the finishing on the movement that features a three-quarter plate, blued screws and polished finish. At Glashütte, they do things right, and it shows.

There is something rather magnetic about the Glashütte Original. It is simple, classic, and elegant. The proverb “less is more” fits it to perfection, where simplicity is preferable to complexity. In this case, however, this timepiece may look simple on the outside but it is a different story on the inside. In terms of design, the dial respects the golden ratio where the perfect aesthetic is sought after through balance and harmony. The offset hours and minutes and small seconds, however, could be considered asymmetrical, but when compensated with the large Panoramic date and the moon phase, the perfect balance is obtained. The dial has been crafted by the manufacture’s experts who are no strangers to the art of galvanization. And the movement’s exemplary finishing is outstanding, especially on the swan neck regulator. The PanoMaticLunar watch from Glashütte Original navigates easily between simplicity and complexity, but also between balance and imbalance to achieve the ultimate in elegance. The truth is there is still quite a way to go on my journey to ultimate elegance, but at least with this watch on my wrist, I am certainly going in the right direction.
