Twin Turbo

Twin Turbo - Jacob & Co.
To celebrate its 30th birthday Jacob & Co. presents the other-worldly Twin Turbo. It’s the world’s first double triple-axis tourbillon with minute repeater.

Maybe it should have been called the Twin Tourbo for its unique complication, but the new limited-edition Twin Turbo model by Jacob & Co. also has a resolutely sporty look that fits the name, which is inscribed prominently with a red T, along the bottom of the case. Incorporating stainless steel, titanium and carbon into the design of the highly distinctive case reinforces the sporty theme. The exclusive manually wound JCFM01 calibre inside it has taken two years to develop and, in addition to its twin tourbillons, boasts a cathedral gong minute-repeater that strikes the ten minutes rather than the usual quarter hours.

The case is a huge 57.3 x 51mm and is made out of grade 5 titanium and carbon fibre. Both the case and the curved, smoked sapphire crystal are designed to show off the unique combination of two triple-axis tourbillons in the lower half of the watch. A special poising system ensures that both tourbillons rotate in sync around their three axes, spinning fast around their first axis of rotation in just 40 seconds, then around their second axis in a more sedate 8 minutes and around their final axis of rotation in three minutes. It is a visual ballet that naturally dominates the dial. But this watch also has a hidden component in the form of its minute-repeater mechanism that chimes the hours, ten-minute intervals and the individual minutes on two cathedral gongs that can be seen at 12 o’clock, at the opposite end of the case to the twin tourbillons.

In keeping with avant-garde design of the piece, the movement can be wound manually by turning an articulated lever housed in the right-hand side of the case middle, while a sturdy pusher on the opposite side can be used to trigger the repeating mechanism. The movement offers a 72-hour power reserve and the time is read off against Arabic numerals etched into the sapphire crystal, a minute scale on a red neoralithe inner ring by black skeleton hands with luminous SuperLuminova inserts.
