Twin Turbo Furious & Oil Pump

Very fast and very advanced

The Twin Turbo Furious is one of the most complex timepieces ever created. To a pair of sequential triple axis tourbillons and a decimal minute repeater, Jacob & Co. added a mono-pusher chronograph with a pit board. It allows for comparison of successive chronograph timings with a clear reading pattern. It’s an understatement to say that triple axis tourbillons are rare. That using a pair of them is even more exceptional. And that decimal minute repeaters are few and far between. They’re called decimal because instead of chiming the hours, the quarters and the minutes separately, they drop the quarters in favor of chiming once for each tens of minutes. The combination of these complications is mind-boggling to put it lightly. But beyond these mechanical matters, the Twin Turbo Furious is designed like no other watch ever was. Asymmetrical, curved, rounded, it narrows in three dimensions as it gets to the top of the case. As a result, Twin Turbo Furious is not only a striking piece to behold, but also a surprisingly comfortable one, especially considering its dimensions. Yet any impression of heftiness is radically altered in its full sapphire case sibling.

Oil Pump, from black gold to rose gold

Extracting meaning from Jacob & Co.’s Oil Pump is a little more complex than it seems. For there is more than meets the eye with this otherwise explicit timepiece. Indeed, this is an oil-themed watch, whose dial is more like a miniature set of rigs, pipes, manifold and barrel. It’s just that the pipes in question are made of rose gold, and that the rigs, both derricks, are not just decorative. For the Oil Pump is animated in two very different ways. One is the drill, which is actually a double-axis tourbillon. Its location may be traditional as 6 o’clock is one of its designated positions. But its axis originates at the center of the movement, underneath the main derrick, and that’s highly unusual. The other animation in this very symbolic piece starts by activating the pusher at 2 o’clock. The entire beam, horsehead and crank of both derricks are then set in motion. Obviously, what’s being pumped by this automaton is stored in the green barrel at 4 o’clock. And from the configuration of the rig, anchored in the middle of a green dial featuring Arabic numerals (Arabic as in the Arabic language, not our everyday digits), it seems that this timepiece is pumping time itself.
