For Only Watch 2019, ArtyA, Boucheron, Christophe Claret and MB&F/L’Épée have chosen to leave the well-trodden paths, presenting sophisticated pieces that contain a microcosm of the animal world.

ArtyA - Son of Earth Precious Butterfly Engraved

Microcosme animalier au poignet

This high-flying piece has a two-tone case hand-carved in its entirety by Bram Ramon, along with a sumptuous dial by Dominique Arpa-Cirpka. Created from fragments of the wings of Morpho butterflies that died naturally, the iridescence comes to life when the watch catches the light. There are no markers to disturb the scene, just the three hands that sweep across the face. It would certainly kindle a spark in the eyes of a sick child.

Boucheron  - Ajourée Amvara

“Amvara” means “infinite space” in Sanskrit, and that’s the theme of this transparent jewellery watch, which features a snake in the starring role. The reptile coils gracefully around the white gold case and white mother-of-pearl dial, describing a figure-of-eight, the symbol of infinity. The snake has been a favourite of the company ever since its founder, Frédéric Boucheron, gave a snake necklace to his wife to symbolise their happy married life. This symbol of joy is repeated on the back of the watch in the inscription: “JE NE SONNE QUE LES HEURES HEUREUSES” (“I only strike the happy hours”).

Christophe Claret  - Maestro Corail

For its fourth time at Only Watch, Christophe Claret has revisited the Maestro Mamba, replacing the green mamba with a tropical coral snake. The hand-carved reptile’s body, clothed in blue and orange scales, coils around the matt black hand-wound DMC16 movement. The multi-dimensional architecture of the calibre draws the viewer into the scene presented by the Charles X stepped and skeletonised bridges that have become a brand signature. The watch also features a patented pyramidal large date in 3D, and a mechanical memo function.

MB&F/L’Épée - « Tom & T-Rex » for Only Watch

Microcosme animalier au poignet

This year, MB&F is not content to present a variation on a model from its collection. It has turned to L’Épée to create a highly symbolic unique piece. The hybrid T-Rex creature is ridden by Tom, a little boy, who could be one of the children suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The dinosaur carries the child away to a fantastical universe where disease doesn’t exist. Its cyborg eye made of hand-blown Murano glass contains a watch dial driven by a hand-wound L’Épée 1839 movement.
