Zakaa Summer Watches: Zakaa’s Top Five
Getting style advice from the one and only Deremi Adjidahun
When it comes to horological style, Deremi Adjidahun, Founder of the boutique Zakaa and Executive Chairman of Hole 19 Group, knows a thing or two. This stylish gentleman is always impeccably dressed from top to wrist. So, when we were thinking of which watches would rock this summer, we knew he would be the best person to ask. Here is his Top Five for Summer 2022 offering colours, functions, and some serious mechanics.
Hublot Big Bang Unico Summer Purple
“Every summer Hublot produces a stunner This pop of purple really inspires me. I would wear this every day on my holidays”
Big Bang Unico Summer Purple © Hublot
The Hublot Big Bang Unico Summer Purple offers a vivid splash of purple to stand out on the beach this summer. The timepiece is housed in a 42mm, satin-finished, lightweight, purple aluminium case and is fitted with a purple Velcro fastener. With a water resistance of 100 metres, it is perfectly suited for all those summer water sports. On the inside, you will find the Manufacture Calibre HUB1280 chronograph movement with a column wheel that is visible through the dial and offers a power reserve of 72 hours. The hands and hour-markers are finised in the same purple colour, with splashes of white luminescence for those summer evenings.
Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 Bronze / Green
“This new model is a great redesign with rich looks and an amazing price point. You could where this for summer travel and/or for work and you would feel totally comfortable.”
Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 Bronze / Vert © Breitling
The new Superocean collection, released earlier this summer, offers a redesign of this Breitling diving classic from the 1960s when scuba diving was all the rage. This new collection retraces the origins of the model, which was called Slow Motion back then. There are several improvements to the 1960 model, however, with a ceramic-inlayed bezel and this gorgeous green dial that is paired with a bronze case and inner bezel. The bronze case is made from a special alloy that has excellent corrosion resistance, while also obtaining a subtle patina over time that will make the watch even more unique. Wear it in under the sea, in the surf, or out to dinner at the port.
Greubel Forsey Convexe Balancier S2
“This is my watch of the year so it goes everywhere with me! It has just the right vibe and inspiration at any time of day or night”
Convexe Balancier S2 © Greubel Forsey
The Greubel Forsey Balancier Convexe S2 takes the most eye-catching elements of the original Balancier S and accentuates and modernises them. While the original version was all about soft curves, this new model is all about contrasts and power. The movement is the same, but the case is new with a different kind of finishing and an overall new design. The watch comes in a slightly larger 46.5mm case and is fitted with a new titanium bracelet, which makes it just perfect for everyday wear, as Deremi so rightly says above. And with a water resistance of 100m, have no fears about getting it wet!
Purnell Escape II Yellow
“Imagine a summer in Saint-Tropez with this piece! The Escape II is amazing and with this intense yellow – wow! I will wear this at every one of those special evenings enjoying good tunes and good company, probably on a yacht bobbing around in the Mediterranean Sea somewhere!”
Escape II Yellow © Purnell
The Purnell Escape II Yellow Ceramicized Titanium is a new model for the brand that screams summer with its yellow case that is created using a new process that offers a particularly light, robust, and colourful result. The Escape II is powered by Purnell’s famous movement, created for the brand by Eric Coudray, with its double, triple-axis tourbillon, which is enhanced here even further here with yellow tourbillon cages that match the case and also the hour-markers and tips of the hands. This piece is an ode to summer if ever there was one!
Armin Strom Orbit
“This is an absolute stunner! And even more stunning on the wrist!”
Orbit © Armin Strom
The Armin Strom Orbit offers a whole new interpretation of the date with a new system that indicates the date on a fixed black ceramic bezel, with a red arrow (featuring the letter “A” for Armin) that jumps to the new date every evening at midnight. The date function has two modes – stationary and active. When the date hand is in the stationary mode, the date is off and remains in the fixed position at 12 o’clock. To turn the date on, the user presses on the pusher on the left-hand side of the case and the hand immediately jumps to the correct date. It’s ingenious and an “absolute stunner” as Deremi so rightly says!
